Sure, the best doctors in the world are here in the New York area. But who are they, and how do you find the one you need? You might ask other doctors -- but we've already done that for you. Starting with a pool of more than 15,000 physicians nominated by their peers, the list was culled, cross-checked, and whittled to 1,500, organized by specialty. This year we've also spotlighted specialists in MS, asthma, prostate-cancer aftercare, and Lyme disease. And once again we present a Hall of Fame: eleven physicians whose work exemplifies the medical profession's ideal, whether they're restoring hearing to the profoundly deaf, giving hope to HIV-infected addicts -- or repairing David Letterman's heart.
