This Lenox Avenue shop, furnished with golden wood floors and ornate vintage tables, is more than a destination for Harlem souvenirs, but it’s definitely hip to that angle. Founder Murphy Heyliger designs all the store’s multi-colored men’s and women’s T-shirts and caps, most of which say “Harlemade” or “Harlem New York” in one form or another: letters printed as skyline buildings, in retro script, or tagged onto silhouettes of seventies beauty shop hairstyles. The disco-style profile of a woman with a mighty ‘fro is the graphic for Heyliger’s shoulder totes, and logo’ed aprons and placemats are also on display. Artwork, jewelry, and crafts by local artists join photo books of Harlem, anthologies of Harlem writers, and posters and postcards of Nina Simone, the Platters, Tina Turner, and other greats, all of which enhance a collection that’s both rich in neighborhood pride and high in roots-y tourist appeal.
Warm, dry, stylish options for braving the slush.
