If it weren't for the beautiful billowy gown in the window, you would probably walk right by the otherwise nondescript storefront. Inside, however, you'll find custom wizards who'll make anything in any color, style, or fabric you choose in three to four months, or outfit you in ready-to-wear. The name of the shop comes from the Greek word for "striking," but past designs run the gamut from sexy (a snug halter dress with slits) to understated and classic, depending on your taste. Check out the romantic nightgown-like designs; the Grecian-goddess-inspired "Artemis" gown, and more traditional strapless satin ballgowns with bows at the bustle.

Everything at this boutique is made from scratch, and Banico’s seamstresses can do anything from a silk-charmeuse, strapless A-line to a smart, satin cocktail number with a plunging neckline ($300 to $600).
